A
bout the Name:
This JEB's Winston is another pen I recreated in homage to an iconic pen once made by the original Conway Stewart Pen Company. The original Conway Stewart Pen Company (CS) was located in England and was in operation for over 100 years. But sadly they had to close their business in October 2014. If you're not familiar with the company and their pens, they were a British company that had been in operation since the very early 1900's with more than two dozen different pen styles to their credit over their many years in business. Their most famous tag lines was "they made the pens for the Queen". Contrary to what many may believe, the name "Conway Stewart" did NOT come from the name of the founder of the company, but rather it was believed to have been derived from a popular vaudeville act of the day. Eventually the original materials and parts were sold off and made available on the open market. Many of those original materials are still available, while others are being reproduced by the original UK manufacturer. If you have an interest in having a replica of a CS pen made, please send me an email. If you would like to read more into the history of The Conway Stewart Pen Company, you can find additional information at wikipedia.org/Conway-Stewart.

Why make a homage or "look a like" pen? One reason is because I've always been an admirer of several of the CS pen styles. And when some of their original material became available a few years after they went out of business for a while, I decided I wanted to try and make a few pens based on some of those original styles. Another reason is because CS pens are still sought by fans and followers, and although they are not "the real thing", it allows me to offer them an alternative to pens that are no longer available. Yet another is the option of being able to have a pen in other non-CS materials that were never used for CS pens allowing a customer to have truly unique and one of a kind pen.

About the JEB's Winston:
The JEB's Winston is a large size pen similar to the Churchill. It's not only similar in size to the Churchill, but the barrels are actually the same shape. The Winston just has a rounded blind-cap as opposed to the squared off blind-cap on the Churchill. Originally, I had to adjust the diameter on the cap because I couldn't find bands in the correct diameter. I had to settle for a slightly smaller diameter. But this is no longer the case (see dimensions below). The clip is still an issue. But otherwise I stayed as close to the original design as possible--including the WEIGHTED barrel.

JEB's Winston Dimensions:
Update June 2023: When I first made this pen, I couldn't find bands that were quite large enough for the cap. So I made the caps diameter slightly thinner. But I was finally able to find a source for the correct size bands (17mm diameter). So I can now offer the cap in its original diameter. So I can now offer the caps in the original 18mm maximum diameter diameter with 17mm diameter bands, or the thinner cap with .66" maximum diameter and 5/8" diameter bands. The difference between the diameters is less than 1/16" (1.125mm).

The ringed clip however, is still an issue though. But I hoping at some point I'll be able to have some made. But in the meantime, I'm still substituting the Churchill clips.

Cap Posting... Because the of the taller cap base (the part below the lower bands), it's possible to post the cap, but with the weighted barrel, it would make the pen much heavier to write with. So in my opinion, I think posting would be impractical with this pen. And because the cap base is longer (than the cap base on the Churchill), I was able to have the cap seat further down on the barrel like the original, giving it a shorter overall length than the Churchill. This was achieved by recessing the pen much further into the cap with the nib reaching up into the finial (something not possible on most smaller diameter pens). Lastly, you'll notice I used the same clip as on the Churchill (the original clip isn't available). The rest of the specs are similar to the original. It has an uncapped length of about 5 1/2". The minimum diameter of the barrel is .55" (behind the threads), and tapers up to a maximum diameter of .59", before tapering down to the Blind-cap.

Weighted Barrel:
The JEB's Winston is available with a weighted barrel, just like the original--but it can be ordered without the weight. The additional weight is achieved with a brass sleeve placed inside the barrel. The sleeve is fixed in place behind the section threads, so it is not removable. The weighted barrel is about 20 grams heavier than the standard barrel, and is only available in the Cartridge/Converter version. But if you want to try it out, you could order the pen with two barrels: one with the weight and one without.

Original CS Material is available:
A few material suppliers have been offering the original CS material for quite some time now, and I've been keeping a small supply of the popular colors in stock. Some blanks are NOS, while other are newly manufactured, but they come from the original manufacturer that is still using the original CS formula's. So if you had a particular favorite of the original CS colors but it wasn't offered in the Winston, now may be your opportunity to get one! Contact me using the link in the Contact & Info tab (above right) for a list of the currently available colors.

JEB's Winston Upgrades:
Just like the JEB's Churchill, the JEB's Winston is available in several inking system options. The standard version is offered as a C/C (cartridge/converter), but it can also be ordered in several upgrade options: Eyedropper, Button-filler or Lever-filler. Please note: the standard C/C version is the only one available in the weighted barrel. So if you order any of the other ink systems, they will come with a regular un-weighted barrel. The Eyedropper version is fitted with a special o-ring that seals the section against the barrel. The stock steel nib could also be upgraded with a 14k or 18k gold nib to make your pen really special! Lastly, the JEB's Winston can order with a companion Rollerball/Ballpoint version too! Inquire for details.

About the Weighted Barrel:
The weighted barrel is about 20 grams heavier than the standard barrel. The barrel is fitted with a custom fit brass sleeve that adds weight along the entire length of the barrel. The weighted barrel is only available in the C/C version. If you want a button or lever filler pen, it must have an un-weighted barrel.

Other Items Available:
I also offer a variety of hand-made Pen Props & Pen Buttons, as well as custom Cuff-Links and Button Covers. You can order a Pen Prop in the same material to match your pen, or any one of the wooden styles made in a variety of stained or dyed colors. The Pen Buttons are available for any of the clipless pens. The Cuff-links and Button Covers can also be ordered to match your pen. I have a variety of styles and finishes in the Cuff-links. The Button Covers are available in gold and nickel.
