Copper Lightning Eversharp Style Desk Pen

If you've perused my website often, then you may have seen the pair of Eversharp desk pens I made last year. Those two pens were made with some 60's era Mazzucchilli acrylic, so they look like the pens of the 50's or early 60's. This more updated version was made using modern acrylics in type, color and pattern. The play between light and dark are striking. The acrylic is sold under the brand name 'Rhino', with the main section of the pen made with a color called 'Copper Lightning'. And the Section and rear Tip made with a color called Snowball. See the bottom of the page for the pen's dimensions.

Painted Section... One issue I had with the pen was with an effect called GHOSTING with the Section. Ghosting is where the material was transparent enough that the parts insider would show. A trick I learned from making kit pens was to block out the ghosting with paint. For the kit pens, you're painting a brass tube to keep it from showing through before gluing the tube in place. Here, I painted the inside of the Section, so the nib housing wouldn't show through. The photo at right shows a before and after comparison (top before painting; bottom after painting). Matching Base
While I was in the process of making the pen, the customer emailed a photo of an old base he had, and ask if it was possible to make something similar. It was a small base about 3" square x 1" tall. A very simple shape--BUT, it had a checkered pattern made with two squares each of black and white marble. Still, it wasn't too difficult. But the issue would be the size of the blocks. Since the base was 3" square, it meant the blocks were 1 1/2" square. So I'd have to find material that was at least 1 1/2" square, plus would compliment the copper and white used in the pen. After doing a little research, and digging through my material inventory, I ran across a piece from a large turning blank that looked like it was the same color as the Copper. I normally use what are referred to as 'pen' blanks for pens. Pen blanks are usually 3/4" square, whereas 'Turning' blanks are larger 1 1/2" square. So I ordered a few pieces, and waited. Once they arrived, I compared them to the pen and the match was spot on for the copper. the 'white', was a little different, but close enough for the base. See the bottom of the page for the base's dimensions.

Eversharp Flared Funnel
When I was working on the first two desk pens, the customer sent an original (vintage) Eversharp desk pen so I could take measurements. He also sent a vintage Eversharp funnel so I could make sure the new pens would fit. Turns out it was a funnel that I had admired for a long time and always wanted to try making. So while I had the funnel, I took careful measurements of that too. Wahl (the company that sold Eversharp pens), made/sold quite a few styles of funnels over the years. This one was very unique because it had a flared top that flared out to the back, a pair of metal bands at the top, and a wide centerband type band at the bottom. So it presented several manufacturing challenges. But after a few samples, I was able to figure out how to make the parts. I also had to search for the bands. Turned out, the band I though would be the hardest to find (the one at the bottom), was the easiest--I already had some! It was a near match to a kit pen centerband. See the bottom of the page for the funnel's dimensions.
